Advice on regrading of JD

Hi, I work in the public sector and two years ago was affected by TUPE which transferred me back to the Council from an Arms Length Management Organisation. Around the same time it was identified that my job description written in 2016 didn’t reflect my role at all, new legislation had completely changed working processes, I became responsible for a service of 60+ people rather than 30+ and my budget responsibility increased significantly. It was agreed that my JD should be replaced with one that was more accurate. I was already at the top spinal point of my grade and had been for some years.

Due to a number of issues outside of my control, it has taken the Council two years to undertake the evaluation of the new JD drafted two years ago. My post has now been evaluated at a higher grade.

I have been advised that I will be placed on the bottom SP of the new grade and work my way through the SPs over the next 5 years and that after some back and forth they have agreed to backdate my new grade to April this year. I have queried this, whilst I want to be reasonable and open to compromise, I feel this is unfair. About a year ago I reevaluated the grade of around 35 officers in my service as the JD was out of date in terms of current legislation and duties. It came back at a higher grade. I initially proposed to move all officers to the bottom of the new grade, but the union and HR advised this would be unfair as essentially meant someone with 5 years experience would be placed on the same SP as someone new to the role. As a consequence the officers were placed onto the commensurate SP on the new grade, so many went in at the top of the new grade.

I have queried why this was agreed in that scenario but they are refusing to do the same for me in the same circs. They have argued that there is only one of me rather than a group but this feels a bit unfair. I have advised that I feel I have compromised on the backdate issue as really the increase should have been applied from 2 years ago when the evaluation should have happened, but I will agree a backdate to April this year, but feel that I should be placed on the top SP of the new grade.

Just wondered if anyone had any advice, is it worth arguing further or do I just accept it.

Thanks
