Which city to live for 4 months ? Chengdu vs Qingdao vs Shenzhen.

🏯 Daily Life

I'm American. For reference, I have been to China for 2 weeks before (typical BJ, SH, Xi'an tour + visited Shenzhen and HK). I am also at HSK3 and I have a lot of Mainland Chinese friends.

My work allows me to take an extended unpaid break, and I am looking to live in China for a few months for both language immersion as well as to experience something new and to travel around. I wouldn't mind dating either

Here are my takes on each :-

Shenzhen :- Super close to HK for when I want good international food + expat events. I liked how clean and spacious parts of it were as well. I would also go during winter if I picked this, so its a way to escape the cold winter of my home city. It did seem relatively unlively though (streets all empty), and the gender ratio is super unfavorable to men. Its also the most expensive of the bunch.

Chengdu :- I like Sichuan cuisine, people are friendly, pretty women, its in a part of China I haven't explored. I have a friend who did 8 months of language immersion here, and he really liked it.

Qingdao :- The most 'unique' and off the beaten path city, good language immersion cause dialect is very close to Beijing dialect. Shandong people are very nice ( I know a bunch back here in the US). I have a lot of friends in Korea and Japan, and Qingdao is a very convenient 2 hour flight from there.

Would love to hear your thoughts and recommendations
