suggestions for living at the beach

As the title says, I live at the beach. I am curious about building a one-person boat that I could tow on my bicycle to the beach, carry the 100 yards or so to the ocean, and then be 'ocean worthy' for just past the initial breakers (so not too far out, dept would be over my head but I could swim back).

I've seen kayaks, and 'canoes' with a support structure, i'm not sure what they're called. I'm very new at this and have done no research; however, I have tools, a garage, and a side yard that I can stow something.
