One Client Cost Me My Upwork Career – Even with 100% JSS
My Experience on Upwork: How I Was Exploited Despite Following the Rules
I am a licensed architect and I provide architectural drawings and design documents through online freelance platforms like Upwork. I had been working with a client who assigned me five separate milestone-based projects. Each project was different, and every time I delivered a file, the client approved the work and moved on to the next milestone — this went on for several tasks.
Then one day, after I told the client that I no longer wished to continue working with him due to his increasingly disrespectful attitude toward me, he abruptly closed all five contracts and began leaving negative feedback — despite having previously praised my work in our chats.
He initially left 1-star feedback on three of the projects, but at that point, my account wasn’t suspended. Then, two weeks later, he returned and left 1-star feedback on the remaining two contracts. Only after that was my account suddenly suspended for six months.
As a result, my Job Success Score dropped from 100% to 58%. I had screenshots of our conversations, showing positive comments and approvals, but this did not matter in the system’s automated feedback calculation.
The whole dispute started because of a small misunderstanding — I had mistakenly refunded $45 related to the wrong milestone and opened a dispute hoping to recover it. But this led to the platform reviewing all previously completed and approved work, which I never expected. Even though I later withdrew the dispute, the damage was already done.
What hurt the most was that Upwork didn’t provide any real protection. The system allowed the client to:
Not close the contracts for months to retain leverage,
Retroactively leave negative feedback,
Exploit the feedback system to damage my account after I declined to continue working with him.
I submitted multiple support tickets and explained everything, but was simply told that they couldn’t intervene.
I spent hours and hours working, sitting at a computer to meet deadlines, believing the platform would protect honest work. But in the end, I was punished — not for doing bad work — but for trusting the system.
This experience has affected me both professionally and emotionally. It’s clear that the dispute and feedback systems are flawed in a way that allows malicious clients to exploit freelancers with little to no consequences.
