Tool progression?

I honestly never played too much, and I only have been going with builder worlds lately, but how do I progress with tools? This far I never even needed tools to be completely honest, but now that I checked out the crafting menu for the first time, I am completely sure there have to be better things than a stone axe which breaks in 10 swings, but I have no idea how to craft good things.
