Encouragement vs. Reality
This one goes out to the working writers in the sub who drop in to give realistic responses to things like loglines and ideas: are you seeing a lack of reality in this sub?
As an indie-produced writer who got a formal screenwriting degree then took a long corporate hiatus and is mostly friends with people who work in the industry, it never leaves my mind how hard it is to break in. Like, ever. It’s taken a lot of my energy to want to even try and pursue this because I know how tough it is, but I want to do it because it’s truly the only thing I’ve ever loved doing.
So when I see posts trying to give people a gut check, I personally find it frustrating and discouraging because yeah, that tape is constantly rolling in my head that this job is the hardest thing I will probably ever attempt.
It occurs to me that… is that not the norm here? Are things seeming kind of caustic to me because they feel like reinforcement but they’re aimed at people who genuinely think they can walk in and get signed on their first script? I’m seeing a lot of the people who are trying to dispense “reality checks” saying that the sub has an encouragement problem, but maybe I’m just not seeing those posts. Idk, I just kind of want to discuss this without coming across as an asshole.
