Is music taught differently in China?
I was assigned to play with a trombone professor from China for an event, and due to the lack of time we never had a chance to practice together, but given that the pieces were pretty simple I expected it to be no problem for him to play. When it came day for the event, he first played a couple pieces solo, which I thought were played pretty impressively, however, when it came turn for us to play, I realized this guy did not know how to play with others, he would constantly go off time from the piano accompaniment, didn't play/listen with me, and barely even made eye contact/cues. The whole thing turned into a mess and I'm just left a little confused. I'm not even a music major, I just grew up playing instruments but my experiences included orchestras, bands, and string quartets so I feel that I have a good grasp on how to play with other musicians, are people in China only taught to play solos?
