20-Year Keeper League Drama: Did the Commish Cross the Line or Just Exploit the Rules?

League Discussion

Hey all—apologies for the long post, but I wanted to lay out the full context. Please read and I would greatly appreciate any feedback.

Background: We're heading into Year 20 of a 12-team, $300 auction keeper league (2 keepers, $15 keeper inflation, $150 FAAB, PPR). Once a team is eliminated from money-to-be-gained games, their remaining FAAB is zeroed out. Waivers are 24 hours. Historically we played on ESPN, but we switched to Sleeper last season. The commish doesn't vote on rule changes to avoid ties—he just facilitates rule changes.

The Situation (Week 17 Championship): Just before Sunday Night Football kickoff, the commissioner (still alive in the championship) drops Amon-Ra St. Brown (who was still to play on Monday Night). The only team with FAAB remaining AND a droppable bench player was his opponent in the championship—but that manager only had Brock Purdy left to play.

So that manager faced a no-win choice:

-Drop Brock Purdy to pick up ARSB for >$1… and lose the championship.

-Do nothing… and let the commish pick up ARSB for $1 FAAB (securing him as a $16 keeper in 2025) in hopes Brock Purdy has a miracle game.

That manager chose not to drop Purdy in hopes to still win the championship. The commish picked up ARSB and went on to win the championship.

The Fallout: Several league members were outraged, saying the commish exploited the rules for personal gain and should undo the move. Others argued that no rules were technically broken, and that we just need better guardrails going forward.

Suggestions so far:

-Move to 48-hour waivers in playoff weeks (since ESPN's old system was 24hr + 3am processing vs. Sleeper's strict 24hr).

-Recognize ESPN's "undroppable" list again.

-Let eliminated teams retain their remaining FAAB through the playoffs.

My Question to Reddit: Would your league force the commissioner to give up ARSB as a 2025 keeper (on grounds of bad optics or unfair play)? Or is it fair game, and we should just update our rules to prevent situations like this in the future?
