Why are people so obsessed with conventional success?

I(20f) find myself not chasing conventional success, to the point that I wonder what's the point of studying too much, or working overtime to get the best promotion? I can be content with no "conventional" achievements, because fulfilling my intrinsic desires are more fun than extrinsic ones.
