violent kid at summer camp
Before I say anything I want to clarify that this child is not my responsibility in the summer camp anymore, but I am still concerned about him.
Though not my main career-focus, this past year I have had two experiences working with kids and while I look for my real job I applied to work at an 8 week summer day camp. As I am a graduate and a little late applyee, I was only limited to two positions: one being a head counselor of a group or a one-on-one counselor in the group for a specific kid with accommodations varying on the case (which is what I picked). I will not talk about the report before knowing my kid (a 7 year old boy) as it was confidential (though slightly downplayed I must say), but I will talk about the experiences that happened with me.
The first week started out somewhat decent. He would have his moments being too energetic and physical, but he did not really show any signs of anger the first day. The second day, he would just not listen for one activity taking toys off shelves of a classroom we were not actually in charge of and iirc throwing things. When he heard me ask the counselor if he should leave the classroom, he immediately started crying saying he "didn't mean it" and I asked him if he just wanted to walk outside and get water to deescalate the situation which worked. His main problem these first few days were just touching things in rooms that didn't belong to him, and not following directions of the teachers. But later in the week was when he started to become more difficult. I did notice that certain peers enabled him as they were the energetic kind that sometimes would not listen (but were not as difficult). Certain activities (mostly calm ones art-related he could make and take home) were better for him, but there was just no way to not let him do the other actives which triggered him. And once his buddy joined the art elective towards the end of the week, he got out of hand and just literally screamed on the top of lungs at a very high pitch directly into my ear unprompted and started laughing (he did this another time again and also occasionally did this to other kids as well). He also had a habit of running away. In terms of physically harming, there were times he would get too rough with peers (the same boys who also slightly enabled him), but this was not the worst part.
He was gone the entirety of the second week as he was out of state (either for 4th of July or maybe not?). What I noticed before from what he said was that he seemed to not get in trouble at home. And what concerned me the most was that he watched a lot of violent movies (Michael Myers, Chucky, and all those killer movies) that his baby sitter or mom let him watch. I kind of had a feeling this is one thing that could have encouraged his violent behavior. Around these times I talked to two other counselors who had the same role I had with him. They both asked if he still fought and attacked kids, and one told me (as well as some kids in his group) that he ate worms the previous year.
He came back the 3rd week and it wasn't that long til he started being violent towards kids. I felt I was letting this happen more and more as he always got physical with a certain kid (whose parents eventually complained about). During the first day of the week, he (though many other kids did too) refused play tennis outside for an activity. While doing his own thing with a friend in the beginning, out of nowhere he threw a tennis ball at a kids head. I decide to take all the balls away from his so he can't use them again (for a good reason), and he kept trying to take them from my hand and run away so at this point I have to hold him as well. Not sure what happened first then, but while holding him he backwards kicked a friend in the nuts and started going crazy, and me and his head counselor decided to call the unit head. This made him freak out even more and started crying and screaming. Mind you, there was no way to desecrate this. He refused to go for a walk away from the kids before he started freaking out. Anyways, by this point I had many other instances of calling the unit head or someone higher as he would do other things of similar nature. The basic incident would be he would be told not to do something that broke the rules of the activity, didn't listen, counselor tells me to pull him out of activity, he freaks out and possibly gets violent with other random kid, then tries to run away crying. Some settings were easier to control where he could sit down and get water especially like I said was more calm. Towards the end of week, I started to take him to a room intended to calm down kids. I always let him bring a friend (I made sure to pick the right kids that wouldn't encourage him to get too active), and on the last day that week I took him and his friend there. However, another kid sensitive to noise was there before us. I let them stay as long as the kid was not bothered. At some point, all the other kids went to the main room outside where they all played with toys and ran around screaming. My kid's one friend (who was one of these enablers for him) came inside the room forcefully so I took them all out so they could not bother the other kid. I tried to lead my kid to a different room that would not trigger him to get too active, but he immediately ran away and started knocking down towers kids were making. While trying to deescalate the situation he ignored me and pushed a kid or two. At this point I had enough and told him I would get one of the unit heads and he immediately started freaking out again. I said I wouldn't call him if he settled down and listened to me. His friend I brought earlier was also begging him to listen. However, he instead started wrecking EVERYTHING in the room and started ripping and destroying items in the room one by one. The upper counselors above of me could not get him to calm down for almost half an hour. I was told by one of them later on that he probably could not hear anything when doing this.
The fourth week, which was just now and the worst week by far: I believe on the first day (or the third week) he randomly pushed a girl off a tricycle and just did not feel sorry at all. Even when I told him it wasn't nice to do and to apologize he just did not care and shrugged it off. The girl's older brother came to call him out and the kid just called him some mean name. He also got anger during lunch because he had to wait on the line to eat lunch and tried to take other campers snacks the brought personally. He did this a lot where during the day he would demand food and cry about being hungry even when we gave all the campers snacks and lunch. He did not resort well to waiting for times to eat too. Anyways, eventually after I told him to wait and didn't let him take other kid's food (because he did this in the past for the same reason being "hungry" which had parents complain), he said "Fine! I won't eat then!" and knocked a special bagel made for a kid with severe allergies out of his hand onto the floor. That Monday night was an activity where the parents were to come and meet the counselors. Mind you, his parents never met me at all and the day before camp started was an activity where we met the campers and their parents. He was the only kid who did not show up iirc. When I asked if his parents were coming, he said his baby sitter was coming. I asked why his parents weren't coming, because the only reason I had to stay extra unpaid hours were because of him staying and I was kind of annoyed his parents seemed like they just didn't care or bother to go (which isn't fair to assume I acknowledge in retrospect). He said his mom had a meeting, and that he did not have a father. I thought this was a joke, but it was confirmed by others that he did in fact not have a father present for a reason I do not know or have business asking about. I felt sort of bad after this. When his baby sitter came I briefly asked for tips on how to calm him down, as he said he mostly spent time with the kid sword fighting with fake swords (and I sure am not doing that with him at camp). He said to give him his space where he could calm down. This is something I had tried doing, but in this camp environment especially in loud active areas there is just no way to do this as he would just run around immediately. I also spoke to unit heads about this saying he should not do activities or be in environments like this, and also be separated from specific kids whom he either bothered or a lot or enabled (mutually). Usually they said they could not do anything about that. The next day was my last full day with him. He had another fit about being hungry when our counselors gave us snacks. He got super mad because he did not like the snack, and I tried to help by asking the counselors if I could give him another snack. But we all agreed this was all we had and he would have to wait for lunch then. He proceeded to get mad and when the other kids were entering a gated garden for our outdoor activity, he said he would go inside and kick people (he definitely wasn't lying because a little before that he was trying to do so). My instincts kicked in and I blocked to gate to not let him go inside. He started freaking out and started picking up rocks and sticks to throw in the air, at me, and it wouldn't have been long until he would do so to the other children. He also tried to attack me, and at this point me and the other counselors agreed to call the unit heads again. They came and tried to talk to him and handle the situation but he did not listen to them as well. The girl sent told me to step away and let them talk to him, and he immediately ran inside the gate I was blocking. This then led to him finding anything he could grab and start picking up and throwing them. He then picked up a garden shovel the counselors told him to drop immediately or they would have to call his mom and send him home. He did not drop it and instead used the shovel to stab into two unopened dirt sacks and knocked two crates full of tools. They also had no idea what to do and had to take him to the office by force to send him home. I was told during this by an upper head specialized in the one-on-one kids that I did the right thing in this situation. Anyways, later during the day (he is already long gone), the unit head of all the kids told me an alarming concern was apparently raised when they had a conversation with the mom (not sure when this happened or if it was related to the incident) and that something probably going on at home is triggering his behavior. It was confidential however and I did not know what it was.
In the middle of the next day I swapped kids and another counselor was in charge of him. I started to wonder if I was doing something wrong or if I somehow was encouraging the way he acted. But it wasn't long after towards the end of the day he started attacking someone in the pool and his new one-on-one counselor yelled at him to stop. He still did it and the counselor asked the lifeguard to remove him out the pool. Of course he freaked out again and in fact jumped back in the pool with force. They then had to literally pick up the kid and carry him out the place and I saw him kicking and screaming. The counselor later on told me he bit his arm in the process (which he had tried to do to me before when I tried to hold him back in situations, but never let him do it). The counselor obviously thought he was too much to handle too. He was gone the next day, but yesterday he ended up finally switching groups (which was something I recommended to the unit heads once or twice before). I was not here for this part, but based on witnesses of the incident he attacked kids at the gym and ran around with his hand out which slapped one of the kids from my new group in the face/eye. He got sent away again (or at least to the office) and apparently attacked the new counselor again. I felt sort of relieved I wasn't in charge of him anymore, as he was too much to handle and the new kid I looked after was much easier.
I can't help but think I didn't do a good job with the kid and might have helped into him acting like this. I know he is not my responsibility anymore, but his behavior just really concerns me. It is not something I have control of anymore, or ever did but I keep wondering what will happen to him. I was just wondering what people thought about this situation?
