[D] Should I apply for a PhD in ML or CS if I want to work in machine learning?

I want to work in machine learning research. Should I apply for a PhD in Machine Learning or go broader with Computer Science? Is direct ML harder to get into? Would CS give me more flexibility?

Would love advice from anyone who’s been through either path. Thanks!
