How to go from brassy to plum? (color theory)

I want to go plum so I’m going to bleach my hair that was previously dyed with permanent dark cherry in January. I’m assuming it’ll end up orange but I read that purples don’t show well over orange hair but reds do. Should I dye my hair red then dye it purple?
