Advice on Recurrent Tonsilitis
Hi, 21M and do not typically take any medication. I am bewildered and not sure what to do.
Starting mid June, I had a sore throat with white patches. Went to clinic, rapid strep was negative. Prescribed 5 days azythromicin as NP said I also had ear infection, and I had completed 7 day course of Amoxicillin 2 weeks prior for conjunctivitis and sinus infection. Negative for flu and covid, no sinus symptoms or cough.
Sore throat and white patches progressed along with fever and extreme fatigue, could not eat or drink without severe pain. Went to urgent care and requested mono test. Mono and rapid strep both negative. Doctor prescribed amoxicillin 7 days as she was certain it was a false negative on strep. 48 hrs later, symptoms are completely gone. I change my toothbrush and clean surfaces. I finish the course of Amoxicillin.
1 week later, feel slight pain on the roof of my mouth. Almost as though I was chewing and hit it with something. I check my throat to see the white patches are back. I go to clinic, rapid strep is positive. NP said most likely due to 7 day amoxicillin course which should have been 10 days. She prescribes 10 days penicillin. 48 hours later, symptoms gone.
Here’s where it gets confusing. On day 7 of penicillin, I get a slight burning sensation in the back of my throat (like when you go for a run on a cold day). I check and see 2 white spots forming on each tonsil. I finish penicillin through day 10, white spots and sensation persist evenly those last 3 days. 24 hrs after finishing penicillin, white spots and redness progress again, looking same as before. Go to urgent care, rapid strep is negative and doctor says just tonsil stones and to not worry. I then get scratchy throat and congestion, no fever, and tonsils continue to swell and get covered in white streaks. Go to doctor again (2 days later). Throat feels fine, congestion mostly clear. Rapid strep negative, send out culture. 4 days later, still no results on culture and white spots and swelling still progressing. No fever or sore throat. Doctor started me on 10 days Augmentin and said to contact ENT. I explain to ENT office the info above, and they said they can not handle my case. I ask why and which specialist I should see instead, she says sorry and she doesn’t know.
My question’s are:
If this isn’t step, mono, cold, or flu, what could it be? And why does it initially respond to antibiotics?
If strep, how could it recur before even completing antibiotics?
Why would an ENT office refuse me an appointment? I am planning to call more offices on Monday, but want to be better prepared on what to say.
Thanks so much.
