AITA for asking my long-distance boyfriend what he wants to do with our relationship after he blocked me?
I (F 22) have been in an on-and-off long-distance relationship with my boyfriend (M 23) for 5 years. For the last couple of months, we’ve been having frequent arguments — mostly about me not talking to him enough. He says I’ve become distant, and I explained to him that I’ve just not been feeling like myself lately. I’ve been feeling very low mentally, and I told him I don’t have the energy to talk to anyone, not just him. I acknowledged it and apologised, and said I’d try to be more interactive. I watched a football match with him (he’s into football), and we had a good call afterward. Things felt okay.
But this past week, my parents had a serious fight, and I was emotionally drained while also dealing with some health issues. I let him know, and he said he understood. A few days ago, I had guests over and couldn’t talk much. I texted him late, and his replies were cold. I asked if anything was wrong, and he said “nothing.” I didn’t push because I didn’t want another argument, and I was exhausted. While we were chatting, my brother (who’s on vacation) called, so I told my boyfriend I’d be back in a minute. After the call, I messaged him, all my messages were seen but he didn’t respond. I assumed he’d fallen asleep. I left him a message saying, “If you’re awake, call me.”
The next day he texted “hey” but I didn’t see it till morning. I responded, but my messages only had one tick. I waited all day, even called — no reply. Around midnight, he texted me again and confirmed that he had blocked me.
When I asked why, he said he was exhausted because I wasn’t talking like how I used to. I explained again (as I had before) that I was going through a rough time mentally and emotionally. I apologised again but told him I couldn’t make fake promises to “get better” instantly — I just didn’t have a timeline for when I’d feel like myself again. I reminded him I’d been open about my mental health struggles from the start of our relationship, and he had said he understood.
Then I asked him calmly, “What do you want to do?” He got mad and said “So this is how strong women are supposed to be? That’s what your Wizard Liz would say, right? ‘This is me, deal with it or leave.’ That’s what you meant, isn’t it?”
I was shocked and said nothing. A minute later, he apologised and said he realised what he said was wrong. I didn’t argue. I just told him I needed space.
AITA for asking him what he wanted to do and for needing space afterward?
I feel bad that he’s hurting, but I feel like I’m constantly trying while barely having anything left in me.
