17- Feeling behind at my Fast food work and making me doubt myself
I’m 17 and have been working at a fast food place for 6 weeks. I work three days a week, I do around 14 hours a week, and I’ve made about $1,000 in 6 weeks so far. I’m trying to save up for a used car, and I feel lucky to be getting paid $16.40 an hour especially since my uncle’s girlfriend helped me get the job. She got me the interview, and I really don’t want to seem ungrateful or like I didn’t try.
Lately though, I’ve been thinking a lot about quitting. I just feel so anxious and overwhelmed. Every Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday I have a shift, I wake up since the morning overthinking everything — what could go wrong, how customers might act, and how slow I might be. I can’t focus on anything else that day because the worry takes over.
Even after 6 weeks, I still feel like I’m not learning fast enough. I already feel more confident around the register by myself but not 100% and I don’t feel like I’m moving as quickly as the other cashiers when packaging orders. One coworker — the only one who’s not that kind to me — points out my mistakes almost every shift. She’s said things like, “By now, the manager and I shouldn’t have to watch over you.” She started saying that when I had three weeks working there and again when I had five weeks. It’s making me feel worse about myself.
The rest of the team, including the manager are actually really nice. My manager is patient and helps when I get stuck or when customers get mad, like the one time I accidentally made a customer mad. But even with the support, I feel like I’m slowing everyone down. Like I’m a burden more than anything.
I’m scared that if I quit now, the manager or other cashiers and employees will think I didn’t care or gave up too soon. I also don’t want the other coworkers to say things like, “She only stayed a month and didn’t even try.” That really gets in my head.
I’ve been debating whether I should just push through for 3 or 4 more weeks until school starts on August 18. But even that feels like a lot. Every shift gets full of people and orders and I get stressed and feels shame for now knowing how to bad big orders and I don’t know if I can keep going while constantly second-guessing myself. But I also want the money and keep saving up.
