Is anyone else... not feeling Odyssey as much as they hoped?
I've been looking forward to Odyssey since it was announced and I was always hoping for a good exploration based DLC, but, and I know this is a really controversial take, I'm not really feeling it as much as I'd hoped.
I've done a few runs using the new ship mechanic, but the ship mechanic itself I find doesn't really add a lot. I was mostly looking forward to it because I was hoping there would be more content in space, but space doesn't really have much content, and the game makes it pretty hard to stay in space (or at least heavily disincentivizes it) especially since the landforms in space are very far apart from one another.
At the start of the game you really have no choice but to immediately go planetside until you can scuttle on the ground for a year or two (because generally, unless mechanoids are coming, why move?) before finally getting back into space for a short spell.
It just seems to me that having a start for the grav ship is maybe a little odd because the content or bonuses for going into space are definitely all late game things, but when you're starting off you have no need for basically any of it.
The wildlife is cool, but I ultimately find that training animals for anything other than hauling gets quickly outpaced by the number of enemies and their tech. It's nice, but I don't personally find much use from it.
I haven't had a ton of experience with the new biomes, but I did stay in the lava fields for a while and found it to be surprisingly hospitable with basically no real challenges to my being there. I stayed there more than a quandrum and just chilled.
It does make dungeons better, however I'm still not a huge fan of Rimworld's combat after all these years, so I personally still find myself frustrated by the ganky nature of the dungeons (looking at you hunter drones or insectoid rooms).
Landforms are cool, but a bit late to the game as there's been some pretty good mods for that for years, which ostensibly does the same things. While that's not a point against Odyssey, it just didn't personally add anything to it for me.
Don't get me wrong, Odyssey does nail aesthetics and has a lot of cool ideas on paper, but I don't think it's quite on par with Biotech in terms of all the crazy stuff you can do.
