Should I repeat intern year or look for PGY-2 positions? PLZ HELP
I didn’t match into my specialty of choice in the 2025 Match, and I’m currently in a prelim IM program. I’m hoping to switch to Family Medicine and am debating between going through the ERAS Match process all over again or looking for open PGY-2 positions outside of the Match.
I really don’t want to repeat intern year, but PGY-2 FM spots are hard to find and may limit my options in terms of location and program culture.
That said, I feel like FM programs aren’t as reputation-dependent, and most seem to offer solid training—so I might be okay going the PGY-2 route.
I just want to make sure I’ll be a competent FM physician by the end of residency, and I’m wondering if repeating intern year is necessary to get there.
Has anyone else been through this transition or have advice on the best path forward? I’d really appreciate any insight!
