Buying a Laptop for Data Science in Germany – Need Suggestions!

Work

Hey folks!

I just got my admission offer from TUHH (Hamburg University of Technology) and have already applied for my student visa — super excited for this next chapter! 😄

Right now, I’m trying to sort out one of the most important things before I fly — getting a solid laptop for my Master’s in Data Science. I’ve been doing some research and shortlisted a couple of powerful options:

  • Lenovo Legion 7i (with RTX 50 series GPU)
  • Dell Alienware 16 (Area 51) – also with the 50 series GPU

My use case is pretty typical for a DS/AI student:

  • Heavy Python coding
  • Training ML/DL models (TensorFlow, PyTorch)
  • A bit of gaming and regular multitasking on the side

Now here’s where I’m stuck, and I’d really appreciate some help from anyone who’s been in a similar boat:

Should I buy the laptop in India or Germany?

If I go for a laptop in Germany:

  • Will it come with German-language Windows by default? Can I switch it to English during setup or later on?
  • I’ve heard most laptops there come with QWERTZ keyboards — is it possible to request a QWERTY layout, or is that super rare?
  • And if I end up with QWERTZ, how badly is it going to mess up my coding flow (since I’m used to QWERTY)? Don’t want to be fighting the keyboard while I’m deep in assignments lol.

I’m also open to other laptop suggestions if you think there’s something better in terms of performance, portability, thermals, or even long-term reliability (I don’t want to get something that turns into a jet engine during model training 😅).

Any advice from people already studying in Germany, or who’ve gone through this decision, would be super helpful. Thanks in advance! 🙌
