AITAH for not wanting to post about my relationship or pregnancy on social media, even though my partner wants me to?
My partner and I have been together for about a year and a half. From the beginning, I let him know that I’m not comfortable posting about my relationships on social media. It’s not because I’m hiding anything, I just feel like relationships are personal, and I prefer to keep them private. I also didn’t want to go through the awkward process of deleting things if we ever broke up.
He disagreed with that from the start. He felt like I should be sharing our first dates, selfies, hangouts on my social media. I suggested that he could post them if he felt that strongly, but he said that since I used to be more active online (posting selfies, bikini pics, etc), it made more sense if I shared them. Ironically, after we got together, I naturally stopped posting so much on social media. And when I did, it was usually just holidays or big milestones.
After about 8 months, I did start posting occasional pictures of us, which made him happy. But even now, he gets frustrated that I won’t post every selfie on my instagram story. It’s not about hiding him or our relationship, I just don’t like to share everything publicly.
Fast forward to a few months ago, we found out that I am pregnant. We’re both excited and doing really well as a couple. However, we’ve started running into the same issue again, but now about the pregnancy. I’ve told him from the beginning that I’m not comfortable putting everything about the pregnancy on social media. We’re still young, and most of our social circles aren’t in this phase of life. I’m not interested in getting unsolicited opinions, judgment, or advice from people I barely talk to.
He, on the other hand, wants me to share updates, bump pics, everything. I’ve told him that while I might post professional maternity photos and maybe a birth announcement, I don’t plan to post much else about it. I also don’t want to share much about our daughter once she’s born. I just have strong boundaries about privacy and kids on the internet.
He’s taken some offense to that and feels like I’m not proud of our relationship or our baby, which couldn’t be further from the truth. He also has never posted about me or our relationship, so it feels a little unfair that he expects this from me, but has never done it himself.
So AITAH for not posting even though my partner really wants me to?
