Salomon Shift binding and alpine boots?

Is it possible to use the binding with alpine boots (grip walk) without inserts - just for the down, of course? How long would it takes to adjust the length between 306mm (alpine boots) and 311mm (touring boots)? I never had this binding in the hand. Thanks.
