Oh boy, I might get crucified for this. Now let me just say that I do enjoy the show, it’s great but if I’m being honest, If someone were to tell me that the show only gotten popular due to the grom episode, I would honestly believe it. That’s not to say it didn’t have an audience before that episode but if we’re being honest, its popularity was average at best before that episode aired. So I feel like people hyped up season one wayy too much. It’s still a good season but it’s baby’s first 7/10.

I have like Major issues with its premiere and the more I think about it the less I like it, and it does play a part as to why I gave season one that score. I know I’m losing some of you guys but walk with me. Firstly I think it was trying wayy too hard to hammer in a poignant message in its pilot episode but here’s the thing: the message, isn’t the problem I think it’s a good message by principle. The issue was not only were they beating you over the head with a yacht, but also it came at the cost of villainizing Camilla making her look like a bad parent when she never had any problem with her creativity.

Like yes, guts during a school play sounds hit or miss. The live spiders for a school project is a bit much. Honestly the cheerleading bit is pretty harmless albeit disturbing. But snakes, fireworks, whatever else she had planned was clearly too much and it felt like the episode was trying to gaslight the audience into believing that Luz’s creativity and her uniqueness wasn’t appreciated. Like I get what they’re going for but I feel like they went about it the wrong way.

And you better believe that the fandom since then has been vilifying Camilla for it for the entire first season, so I never forgave its pilot episode for that, because she may not have been perfect but she was really trying as a single parent. Also really subtle little wink 😉 on the “think inside the box”camp broacher. And when I say a subtle little wink I mean a fatal stabbing in the eye with a F$&#%!NG SALAD FORK!

I’m so sorry, I do enjoy the show but you have to understand between the episode trying really hard to cater to a specific audience, making it feel like that everyone around Luz is the bad guy for going too far in school, and hammering in a message that while good, does end up feeling hindering especially knowing what happened earlier in the episode is the catalyst for the message being told. Amphibia did a much better job with conveying the core theme in its first episode, why couldn’t this.

Sorry for the rant I just had to get it out there. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, I’ve honestly enjoyed the second episode much better than its premiere especially with Eda’s speech at the end of choosing your own destiny. The message in the first episode isn’t bad again it’s everything in the first half that was the catalyst for it being conveyed and that bothers me.

Alright now it’s your guys turn to share, and thank you for reading.

Whats a show that you like/love but didn’t have a great pilot (first episode)? I’ll go first. Bare with me as it’s a little long.
