Did i miss an opportunity?

US Sale

Had a customer this weekend that son had totaled their car the day before and prefaced that everything was still fresh, needed to look at some options etc. got the impression he has asking me to set my expectations low and not push hard.

We test drove, nice family, forthcoming with everything. We get back and the family thanks me, says they arent going to do anything until they check out another brand since its what they wrecked, this is a top contender. I ask the magic question and am told the same thing but wants my card.

We come back inside i go to get management, explain what was said, manager says theres nothing he can really change about it and tells me just to follow up. I go back to customer they say “i have to look at other options, and not ready to buy right now but whats your best price?”

I went with “well if you are not sure if this is the right vehicle and you are going to check out other options, im not sure this one will be here at that time but once youve checked that out and decided this is the route you want to go ill be happy to get you the best price on anything? Sure we couldnt put something together today?”

He said no, repeated his thing, gave me his email and said hed let us know when he was ready to move forward.

Today i reach out and they bought the subaru because “its what he really wanted to begin with”

Did i mess up not just giving numbers?
