Overview of Pokemon TCG Strategy?
I'm a veteran Magic player (some years out of practice, but I was a solid competitive player for a long time) but have very little experience with Pokemon TCG. My kids have gotten into it, and my older kid is showing some interest in actually playing the game. We have a level 1 precon game which is pretty simple, but I get the sense that it must not really show much of the game's strategy. He's interested in moving up the ladder, but I'd like to learn more about the game so that I can teach/coach him more effectively.
If I were trying to give someone a crash course in competitive MtG strategy, I'd teach them core concepts of gameplay (tempo/mana efficiency, card advantage/selection, board presence) and the core strategic archetypes (aggro, control, midrange, and combo) and how they function. If I were teaching them how to play limited I'd also focus on card selection, but I'd probably focus on constructed first just using relatively good meta decks to develop an understanding of the core strategy before moving on to deckbuilding later.
What would the Pokemon equivalent of this be? I can tell that card advantage is less of a big deal in Pokemon as card drawing seems very easy. All the level 1 set really shows is that if one side gets a strong active pokemon in play with sufficient energy it can bully the other team and put them in a position where it's very difficult for them to come back. The only "tricky" play is potentially forcing a swap of active and benched pokemon with a trainer card, which can sometimes help stabilize things. Once one player is ahead it's very hard to come back. I have a hard time imagining the full game is like this.
Any advice or resources would be much appreciated!
