When should I start applying for APS jobs for next year?

I am in my last year of uni next year but I only have 4 subjects left next year so I was thinking of doing uni part time and trying to get a part time APS job. Does anyone know when you need to start applying. I was thinking December but is that too late? I’m going on exchange next semester so I wouldn’t be able to start working until mid January.
