Odd question but want to be safe

Im currently a sophomore in college and will be living in my own home soon,parents want ke to have a pistol, but I am under 21, I am aware of Virginias family gifting laws but my concern is would it be acceptable for myself to accompany my mom or dad to a FFL to pick up or purchase a handgun and mention that it is going to be gifted to me, Or is just a way to get my parents denied?
