I subdued a murderer at a gas station. A part of my wanted to die that day

CONTENT WARNING: VIOLENCE/DEATH

I was in the Army, two tours (Iraq & Afghanistan) and was discharged in late 2013. I Had no realistic plan on what I was going to do with my life.

By early 2014 the money I saved was gone. I took up a job on the other side of Houston. It's June 2014 and I needed gas and my GPS directed me to a Valero on the off ramp into a sketchy area. I get out and walk toward the store to put money on pump whatever.

It's like 100 degrees, I'm parked at the pump and exiting my crappy Saturn when I walk by an older man agitated and waving his arms at the van I was beside. They were arguing and then I saw him shoot the female driver in the head and split it openI grabbed him from the back. At the time, I was down on my luck, struggling, and just frustrated about my own life in general. I'm 6'4, around 220 lbs sees this small, older man shout and scream and takes this woman's life, something clicked. Given my life at that point, I was pissed off someone in society would do something like that and wanted to be a good Samaritan. Maybe based on my own shortcomings, but also because if I took a bullet, well that's a way to go out, because life's not working for me.

I got him down, a bystander kicked his gun away (after firing a few shots at me) and it became a news story. The neighborhood showed up and all I wanted to do was to just go to my crappy apartment to get some sleep. They said I was lucky to be alive, which I was. But given how I was at that point in my life, I'd of been OK had it gone bad.

I'm currently married and have two amazing young boys. I don't bring it up. No need to.

Just given that "15 minutes of fame" back then, I wanna get it off my chest how I was feeling that day.
