Please help me identify this moth or butterfly (apologies in advance for the poor illustration from a slipping memory).

I was driving between Lordsburg and Deming, New Mexico around 12:00 am in the morning. I had to pull over on the side of the road to take care of a mess before I could get back on the road. I left the door open for a few minutes and when I came back in, a flying bug was in the car. I initially thought they were a moth because it was night time but I distinctly remember the wings being folded while they rested rather than flat so they might have been a species of nocturnal butterfly? I also remember a bright orange accent on the wings, though most of the wings were gray, maybe with white dots. The body was fuzzy and dark.

They did not seem to be too worried about me trying to capture them to put them outside before I started driving again. The bug actually rested on me for a few seconds. Once I caught them, I stuck my hand out the window and they stayed a bit before taking off into the night.

I would love to be able to identify the moth/butterfly because at the exact time I was pulled over, my grandmother was passing away in El Paso. It felt surreal and I won't forget how I felt in the moment, pulled over trying to save the bug from getting stuck in the car and then a few minutes later, getting the call that I was too late to say goodbye.
