Can someone catch me up?

So I've not played pokemon since..... Gen 4? I think? I've got a switch and I'm looking at getting Legends - Arceus. Can someone give me a (hopefully brief) account of what I've missed? I've read about mega evolutions, as an example, but no idea how they work. Is there any other new key features or general advice?
