Renew passport before h1b stamping

Hi, I’m currently working on my F1 opt. I got picked in the h1b lottery and my petition got approved. I’ve received the i797 for my change of status.

My passport expires mid-next year and wanted to renew it. I wanted to know that is it safe and recommended to renew my passport here in the US before my stamping. The idea is I don’t want to be carrying around 2 passports post my stamping.

I am from a citizen of India. Has anyone done this and what is the general recommendation?
