Hi all,

I’m somewhat disappointed as I purchased a high spec Dell XPS 15 - see photo 2- at the end of 2022, and the motherboard has failed. (Advised by local repair shop and Dell tech support)

They’ve quoted the repair will cost $520 AUD ($350 USD) - (photo attached) and I don’t think they will replace the motherboard. Only repair. It also says they may use refurbished parts.

My understanding is that it’s common for the XPS 15 to overheat and fry the motherboard. Also, the repair only comes with a 90 day warranty. I’d prefer not to burn the money only to have it crap out again. On the other hand, it’s been a great computer so if it can be saved I’d like to keep it.

I really know nothing about computers so hoping someone on here can point me in the right direction. Fortunately, I can afford to replace the laptop with something decent if that’s a better option in the long run. Budget going up to ~3k AUD (2k USD) but at this stage for me every dollar counts.

I’ll be using the laptop to work from home mainly in large word and excel files. Will need to be able to do video calls, screen sharing, and keep lots of tabs open. Preferred but not essential - I’d also like to play minecraft with my stepdaughter.

Looking forward to hearing what you guys think.
