Making Friends
I want to make friends so bad but here's my problem...
I'm someone who loves to have long, meaningful conversations with another person. Other than that, I have no desire to interact with anyone unless it's meaningful in some way. So, when I'm told I need to learn what's "appropriate conversation" for each level of an interaction, I'm totally lost. I was told when I start out so intense I am viewed as an "unsafe person" by others. I don't even understand what that means! Small talk and pleasantries, chit chat and blah blah blah do not appeal to me in the slightest.
My therapist had the audacity (I'm being hyperbolic) to suggest I approach random people at a museum that are looking at things I like to look at and strike up conversation... Like, are you serious right now? Are you seriously suggesting I approach a rando and just start yapping?? Just the thought is making my brain go fucking haywire. There is nothing I would rather do less than that. I'm not even joking. I hate small talk that much.
Does anyone else relate? Am I a hopeless cause? Why do neurotypical people have to be so fake all the time? I don't understand it... If anyone has any advice, I'm open. I'm just so lost when it comes to this... 😔
