Getting lost in the jungle of oxidative stress testing
Hi Reddit,
During the past decade I've been under a lot of stress seemingly for no reason. High anxiety and very tired despite otherwise good sleep and health and fitness. Only just now am I starting to look into possible causes for it.
I'm testing methylation issues, some basic mitochondrial disfunction testing (rough indication, because the nervous system is somewhat seperate from blood and buccal tests), and a WGS DNA test for finding DNA / mtDNA mutations.
All goes well, but there's one thing I'm seriously getting stuck on. I've read about oxidative stress and how it increases cell damage and communication between neurons.
I'm against using MitoQ or sulphuraphane together with other powerful anti-oxidants straight out of the box because we actually need ROS and a certain level of oxidative stress for general health and apoptosis of disfunctional cells, right?
So I testing testing first is best. But I have no idea which ones are actually effective? Blood levels tend to naturally fluctuate too. Can anyone advice me on what tests can provide a good overview od how functional my oxidative stress levels are, so I know which supplements to take?
The ones I found are:
GSH, GSSG, GSH:GSSG ratio, SOD, GPx, Catalase, 8‑OHdG, MDA, F2-Isoprostanes, Lipid Peroxides, Total Antioxidant Capacity, ROS, Nitrotyrosine, CRP, hs-CRP, Homocysteine, Uric Acid, Organic Acids test.
