Has anyone had to pay VAT on low value items from abroad?

I know that HMRC prefers it now if international sellers arrange to pay the VAT to them at point of sale, but small brands don't.

Has anyone ordering been hit with a VAT and customs clearance payment lately? I'm talking a sub-£25 item from abroad.

(I know what the rules state just curious as to people's experiences)

I'm asking because if there's a customs clearance fee involved I may as well source it elsewhere.
