They sent me to the Worm's base. Now every eye I see looks back through me.

Long Dream

I had this dream last night but it didn’t feel like a dream. It felt like I was there. It felt like I had been dropped into another reality, one that hated me for even breathing.

The world was gone. Something called WORM had taken it over. It wasn’t a single creature. It was millions of pieces, all with eyes, crawling into people and wearing them like skin. They walked around, talked, laughed, but there was nothing human left inside. You could tell just by looking at them. It was like watching mannequins trying to remember how to be alive.

Everywhere looked like a war zone. Fences, cameras, alarms. People with empty faces just standing like soldiers. If you weren’t taken, you hid underground. You stayed quiet, listening to the sound of boots above you. I was with a small group of survivors. Me and another guy got sent to infiltrate one of their bases. We thought maybe we could steal something, or find out how to fight back.

We got caught. They dragged us into a cell. The walls were cold and wet, like the inside of a throat.

Breaking out was the start of the nightmare. Everything in that place reeked of death. There were traps in the hallways, blood smeared on the walls, and the sound of footsteps coming from nowhere. The whole time I felt like there was something breathing on my neck, something just behind me that I could never quite see.

I managed to slip out of the cell. He was stuck behind a locked door. I could see him through the bars but I couldn’t leave him. I couldn’t just leave anyone there.

Even the animals were gone. Dogs, wolves… their eyes were the same. Empty. They stalked the halls like guards, sniffing the air, like they could smell fear itself.

I went back for him. We crept through that place, every corner hiding something waiting to tear us apart. We killed them quietly, fast, just to get through. Every kill felt useless, like stabbing water.

Finally we found a last room. There were five or six of them inside, standing perfectly still. Their eyes followed us but their bodies didn’t move. We cut them down one by one.

At the end of a long corridor there was a little girl. Alone. She had only one eye and she was smiling at us like she knew something.

We thought… maybe if we kill her, we can free this place. So I ran at her and drove a pair of scissors straight into that eye.

The moment I did, the sky outside started screaming. A woman’s voice echoed everywhere, like it was coming from the clouds:

“Remember. One eye for one worm.”

And I understood. You can’t save anyone by killing one. There are too many.

We left the base empty. Every single thing inside was dead. But as we walked out into those silent streets, it still felt like we hadn’t made a difference.

When I woke up, my ears were still ringing with that voice. And for a few seconds, I wasn’t sure if I was actually awake.
