My opinions on the new Skate.

Because the NDA is in place, Im not gunna talk about anything specific, but more just a general overview of what I think about it.

Firstly, this isn’t Skate 4. I think if you go into it expecting it to be, then you’l be disappointed. It looks and feels kinda like a mix between the Tony Hawk games, Skate & I got some real Forza vibes when completing challenges. However, I feel like it’s a game for non skaters to get into skating, a gateway to get into skating just like the Tony hawk games were all those years ago.

I get a real sense that EA didn’t want to make this game. The original series didn’t sell very well in comparison to other games on their roster and this game feels cheap. I know, I know, it’s only in pre-alpha phase, but I don’t think this is something that is going to be invested in unless people buy micro transactions or some big brands plaster adverts everywhere in the game which is kinda worrying in wether or not people will continue with this game if it heads in that direction.

And yet, it’s a fucking vibe man.

There are a lot of things that bug me about it sure, but there is some crazy level potential with this game. Is it the skate 4 I wanted? No. Is it a skate game that I didn’t know I wanted? Maybe.

I was rolling around the city and saw someone seshing a star set, so thought I’d join in. Then a couple other joined in. Before I know it there’s 5 people all taking turns tricking down this star set, using poses to clap and cheer each other on. Rolling down to the skate park and setting up a little high score competition for 5 minutes. The most important thing with any video game isn’t what it looks like, it’s that it’s fun. And this game is a lot of fun.

The level of potential is insane with an online skate game. Monthly challenges. Start your own skate brand. Filming challenges. Like, imagine knowing you pulled off the longest manual in the world that month? Or even a spot that gets picked weekly and you can unlock some kind of special boards or stickers or T-shirts. There is so much they could do with it. Whether they will or not is yet to be seen, but me personally I’m having a blast with this play test and I’m genuinely really excited to see what they do with it.
