trading picks for cap space?

In the MPJ Cam Johnson trade, the nuggets essentially traded their future 1st for 17m of cap space considering they are a similar caliber+ skillset of player. Do you think trading future 1sts for cap space would work? Obv their still would have to be a cap for that but is interesting and can help a lot of teams stuck due to the modern CBA.
