Need Advice — Got Called for Interview at Microsoft But My Career Direction Has Shifted
Hi everyone,
About a month ago, I applied (via referral) for Role A at Microsoft. At the time, my professional experience aligned well with the job description, and I was genuinely interested.
However, over the past few weeks, I’ve reflected deeply based on my coursework and recent projects, and I’ve realized that my long-term interests and passion lie in a completely different direction. In fact, just now I’ve come across another open role at Microsoft that’s much more aligned with what I truly want to do.
Just a few days ago, a recruiter reached out regarding the original role(role A) and asked me to proceed with the technical screening — including filling out details like location preferences, compensation expectations, and skills.
Now I’m unsure how to proceed:
- Should I go ahead with the screening anyway (for practice/experience), even though I’m no longer excited about the original role?
- Or would it be better to politely step back and let the recruiter know I’d prefer to be considered for the other role that aligns more closely with my current direction?
I don’t want to burn bridges at Microsoft, especially since I’m still very interested in working there — just in a different capacity.
Has anyone faced a similar situation? Would love your advice on how to navigate this professionally and thoughtfully.
Thanks in advance!
P.S. Yes, I refined this with ChatGPT. Please don’t roast me for it
