How do I start getting into the main continuity ?

I've been wanting to get into the main canon story of the comics but have no clue how to start. I've read a few comics online but I didn't really understand it or have any idea the context of the story. I've heard people say you can start reading from any point but that doesn't just click for me. Which comic run should I start reading first ?
