My new in person therapist only listens. I don’t think it’s helping me. Should i stick it out further ?
ok so this is how the session goes
I say what has happened to me or what i’m going through or how I am feeling.
She listens to it all then responds only to the last thing i said by repeating what I said back to her.
example:
me: I finally broke up with my boyfriend. He has been so emotionally abusive and keeps putting me down every chance he gets. he calls me a loser and refuses to see my attempts at progress. I have been begging him to be kind to me and keep his hurtful comments to him self. It has been very painful these last few days not speaking to him. but some good things have happened. i secured a photo gig for next month. and I went to an interview for a position im way under qualified for in a corporate setting. and have been invited for a second interview. it was very difficult not to call him and tell him the good news. i believe i am obsessed with getting his approval. i want him to be proud of me. i’ve also managed to clean my room some which has made me feel a bit better. idk i guess im all over the place.
Her: Why do you feel all over the place ?
me: well … i finally broke up with boyfriend and i miss him and i feel so terrible but also happy and free and i dont know how to balance these emotions.
Her: so you’re having a difficult time balancing your emotions
me : yes i guess so. idk
her: (silence)
me : (silence)
her: (silence)
me: umm idk i think cleaning my room is such a good thing. i finally cleared off my bed and have been making attempts to make it every morning. my room is a literal disaster like i can’t see the floor or anything
her: why do you think your room is such a mess.
me: idk i think it’s so many reasons (blah blah blah)
etc… ——————- anyway so that’s how it’s going. we don’t actually address any issues. she just keeps repeating what i say to her or asking me why i say a thing.
i feel like im speaking to my self. (which i do non stop anyway) I can be quit the yapper in my everyday life. but in therapy i give the therapist time to speak and am genuinely looking for some insight and new perspective. i have learned through out the years to give therapist the time to speak. and am basically looking for those aha! moments when the therapist helps me see something i didn’t see before. or points out some part of my personality i am missing or helps me understand a situation a bit better.
those aha! moments are the reason i go to therapy. it is genually so helpful to speak to someone and have my entire narrative flipped on its side. i usually leave those sessions feeling mentally stimulated and reinvigorated by life!
these sessions though feel like nothing …
it’s been about 4 sessions now and it’s a lot of nothing. i just yap to my self and keep repeating things over and over and the session ends and i feel so alone and still lost and tasked with figuring it all out on my own.
she also asks me questions that seem like she wasn’t actually listening since im constantly repeating my self.
idk. and tbh since its in person i can see her as i speak . like in the flesh. and she seems bored.
now in the past i have had these thoughts that im my therapist favorite client and all this silly stuff but i have come a long way and its a bit uncomfortable to now feel like my therapist just doesn’t care.
is there some kind of value to therapy life this that im missing ?
i don’t want to look for another therapist and am genuinely not sure if im just missing something.
TLDR my therapist doesn’t give me any feedback or help me see things in different ways she just listens and repeats everything i say to her back to me in question form over and over. im not sure if this is some kind of therapeutic approach that has value that im not seeing.
