Should I accept a support/implementation role early in my career if I want to become a PM?
Asking again because i am in desperate need of help :/
Hi everyone,
I’m a B.E. Computer Science graduate with training in Data Science, AI, and ML. I joined a Hyderabad-based company 4 months ago that builds billing software for restaurants and supermarkets. My dev work so far has been minimal — mostly Java and JavaFX, but I’ve had barely anything to code, and most days I’m idle.
Now the company plans to expand to Kerala (my hometown), and if a deal with a brand goes through, I’ll be sent there to lead implementation and support for a new potential clients. This includes software setup, staff training, support management, and possibly leading a small team.
⸻
Here’s my dilemma: • I’m more inclined toward Project/Product Management than pure coding. • I’m worried that taking a support-heavy role this early might affect long-term growth. • I’m not learning much as a dev anyway, and I don’t want to waste more time. • I’ve considered starting DevOps from scratch, but unsure if that’s a real direction or just fear talking.
⸻
My goal:
To become a Project or Product Manager — someone who leads delivery and bridges tech with business and users.
⸻
What I need help with: 1. Should I take the Kerala role and grow toward PM from there? 2. Should I pivot to something more technical like DevOps now? 3. Or should I just look for better structured roles elsewhere?
If anyone has made a support → PM transition or dealt with similar early-career confusion, I’d love to hear how you approached it.
Thanks a lot — open to any honest advice!
TL;DR: B.E. CSE grad with AI/ML background. Joined a billing software company 4 months ago — barely any dev work (Java/JavaFX). Now being considered for a support/implementation lead role in Kerala for a client. I’m more interested in PM roles but unsure if this shift will help or hurt my growth. Considering DevOps too. Should I take this path, learn something else, or switch jobs?
