Did my friend start avoiding me after I came out as a lesbian?
I (20F) recently came out as a lesbian. Two years ago, I came out as bi and my close friend (straight, has LGBTQ+ friends) was supportive. This year I told her I realized I’m actually a lesbian, and while she didn’t react negatively, she did say something like, “Maybe you should try with a guy to be sure,” which felt a little off. I told her I was sure, and she dropped it.
Since then, our friendship has changed. We used to hang out just the two of us — movies, walks, talking about everything. But now, she always invites someone else along. Even when we make plans to talk or go for a walk, another friend ends up joining. When I ask to grab coffee, she insists someone else comes too. It feels like she’s creating distance.
She also planned a summer vacation with other friends during the only month I’m busy with drama school prep. She didn’t ask when I’d be available, even though her job is flexible. I wasn’t invited, and now she just says, “Can’t wait to tell you all about the trip!”
What also hurts is that she never asked how I felt after coming out — no “how did you know?” or “how are you doing?” It’s like she doesn’t want to talk about it. And I’m scared to bring it up because I know she’ll say I’m overreacting or “need therapy.” She goes to therapy and sometimes acts like that makes her right about everything.
I haven’t come out to my mom yet, so I don’t have many people to talk to about this.
Am I reading too much into things, or is this shift in our friendship real?
