Did losing Crying Child cause William Afton to start his killings?

I always liked the idea that William started what he did so that he can save his son. From my understanding a child's soul carries something called Remnant and that can make you immortal right? I don't have all the lore down but I like the idea that William did horrible things to somehow give his son life again but is this true or is he just a mad scientist type character?
