TIFU by mixing up July and August

M

This happened on July 28th. I'm shopping in my local supermarket that is known as one of the better ones in the region, but also pricey. My routine is to do the bulk of my shopping at another supermarket just down the road, and then head over to this one for a few products/brands they don't have in the other store, e.g. yoghurt. Typically this time of the day it's very calm and I'm in/out in under 5 minutes.

As I grab my favourite yoghurt, I see that it expires on the 26th. Not trying to make a fuss about it, I approach the girl who is filling the fridges right next to me (I wasn't sure if she was an employee or just a student which is quite common this time of the year) and sort of whisper 'think you might wanna take a look, this expires on the 26th and we are the 28th'. She goes 'Oh shit, that's not good' and meanwhile we check the other flavors of the same brand and they all expire on the 28th. 'Right, need to replace this as fast as possible', while apologizing.

So at this point I just help here empty the entire fridge, when the manager walks by. He feels even more bad about this and has no idea how this could happen because - as I learned later - they have some sort of scanner, and twice a day they go around to discount produce that is about to expire. He thanks me for being discrete about it and for giving them a hand, and at this point there are 4 carts completely filled with yoghurt. I don't know how many units exactly, but some after some napkin math it must be close to 500. Off they go.

Still needing yoghurt I head over to another fridge to get a different brand and notice these expire on the 21th. In disbelief i check my phone and realize my fuck up. 28/8 was on the first brand and 21/8 on the 2nd. 8 is august and not july. Manager comes back with a bunch of vouchers and reductions/coupons in his hand, while apologizing once again. I muster all my courage and with what bust have been the reddest face in the world, I sheepishly say: 'Uhm ... I think ... Uhm ... I was wrong'. Manager takes a look at the other brand, realizes immediately what I am about to tell them and just shakes his head. And leaves to the back of the store to get the girl to bring the carts back.

Ashamed I stand around waiting for the girl to come back and at least offer them a hand to put them all back in the fridge. After about 20 seconds 4 more store employees appear next to the manager/girl and the 4 carts with yoghurt and they fill the fridge back up in no time, while cracking one joke after another clearly making fun of me (e.g. one guy to another 'you go on holiday mid august right?' 'yeh why' 'you might wanna double check to make sure it wasn't july'). Kept chatting with them for a while afterwards having a laugh about it, and the coolest thing was that the manager still gave my those vouchers/coupons.

Obviously in a small town word travels fast and I've had my fair share of the jokes ever since from neighbours, friends and in the pubs. The only thing I can do is eat some humble pie as I'm usually the first one to have a go at others.

Not a TIFU with any consequences, but I'll be reminded of my stupidity for the foreseeable future around town.

TL;DR on july 28th I thought the yoghurt was expired as it said 26/8 which resulted in store employees emptying and refilling the fridges and me becomeing the center of jokes around town
