Have I been unknowingly offending other parents?

I just watched a video asking “what’s something that didn’t piss you off until you became a Mom?”

One of the top comments was “STOP TELLING MY KIDS ‘Oh it’s fine/alright/okay’ WHEN I DONE TOLD THEM THEY’RE NOT ALLOWED! I’M THEIR MOTHER DAMNIT”

Some responses were:

  • “🙈the number of people who tell my kids “it’s ok!” After they’ve been rude/ran into them ect and every time o say the same thing “it’s not ok. I’m trying to raise good people please don’t say this is ok.”

  • “As a young person, I just don’t know what else to say because if a kid does run into me I say “it’s ok” so they know they’re safe and I’m not upset. What is the preferred statement?”

  • “Honestly from my perspective im telling the kid “its okay” as in im not mad cause im sure it was an accident 😭im not tryna undermine you i promise i just dont want little human to feel guilty for being hyper and being a kid.”

  • “THIS! I had a case of soda for myself at a friend's house cuz inwas staying for a few days, one of her kids asked me for one, I said "ask your mom" like im not gonna give someone else's kid something without their ok lol”

  • “this!!! my kid goes up to random people asking for their snacks and Im saying no and they're like here you go”

  • “I’ve learned to combat this by saying “no, it actually isn’t okay.” That shuts the other adult up pretty quick.”

  • “Ughh yes! I have a daughter with an intellectual disability so she’s struggling with understanding boundaries and we are working really hard on it and asking people for consent. It drives me crazy when I’m trying to reinforce boundaries and the other person says, “it’s okay”. No, it’s not okay. For her own safety I need her to understand boundaries.”

  • “AND STOP TELLING MY CHILD “you’re okay”. They’re upset. Help them through it or use planned ignoring. Don’t tell them how they feel.”

  • “I cuss then Out right then and there.”

This was shocking for me to read. I couldn’t tell you how many times I’ve mindlessly defaulted to something like “it’s okay”. I’ve been in several of the same situations in the comments (some on both sides of the scenario). I’m wondering what your thoughts are on this? Have I been unknowingly offending other parents?
