My mom looked at me and said, “I probably should throw this away, huh?” and I replied with a slightly irritated “yeah…” The thing she was talking about was a pink stuffed bear holding a heart that said “I love you”—a gift I gave her for Mother’s Day. Not long after, it ended up as one of her dog’s toys, which eventually tore a hole in its ear. And now, here she was, casually tossing it in the trash like it meant nothing.
