Could a Roto Tom be the solution?
Hey everyone!
I play in a small metal band and we have secured quite the number of gigs in the next months.
Now, being an extremely small band I always have to play on the house kit, (or on the drumkit of one of the drummers who live closer to the place which is going to play that night) and these are mostly 4-piece kits. I have adapted my fills, but I really dislike playing a 4 piece and i would love to play with 2 toms over the bass drum...
So i was thinking... could one of those big rototoms fill the void? I was thinking about a 16" one, to mount like a rack tom. It's cheap, it's easy to tune and it's easy to carry around.
I'm a big fan of danny carey so i feel like with a good skin and some moongel i could get a sound i like out of it.
I'm only worried about a couple of things:
I never played one in real life, so i don't know how it sounds without soundprocessing, i definitely don't have Danny's drum tech, or a drum tech at all lol - could it be inappropriate for our music?
I heard rotos are lower volume compared to normal toms, and I know we're gonna play in small clubs, but it's still metal, will i have to make sure it's properly mic'd up?
What do you guys think? Bad idea?
