Top batten too short?

The top batten slot on my main is 44 1/4". The top batten is 34". It's my 2nd season with the boat, and I hadn't noticed this until I was reinstalling the battens and re-mounting the sail. Sailing the boat, I don't see anything amiss with the sail shape. The batten I do have is a UK sails batten and the sail is from UK sails. Is this a normal practice?

I'm going to give UK sails a call when they open to see what they suggest.
