Do you think changing to a dietetics career makes sense for me?
Pros:
-I’m very passionate about nutrition and health due to personal experiences.
-I love learning and research. I especially love the idea of a job where you are expected to care about information quality/accuracy (this has generally not been the case in my marketing career).
-Dietetics actually helps people. My current and past jobs haven’t, which has always bothered me.
-I’m willing to spend quite a bit of time and money to get the right education. I have plenty of savings and no debt right now.
-If for some reason being a dietician/traditional dietetics career paths didn’t work out for me, I could combine a dietetics education with my existing background to do marketing/communications in a healthcare or food-related industry (and really know what I was talking about, hooray!), or possibly work as a science writer.
Cons:
-I’d likely have to spend about 2 years taking science prerequisites at a community college to get into a master’s degree program. My undergrad degree is >5 years old and in a liberal arts field. (I did reasonably well in gen chem and a few public health-related courses, but that was a while ago.)
-I have no health-related work experience, unless you count marketing for a few wellness-related clients. (I wouldn’t.)
-For personal reasons, I need to live in a city with a high cost of living. I realize this is not the best-paying career, but it seems to be at least comparable pay to what I’m used to, somewhat in demand, more AI-resistant than what I’ve been doing, and so much more interesting/satisfying.
