AITA for possibly wanting end 10 year relationship?
My parter M30 and myself F28 have been together for 10 years and overall have had a really great relationship. My partner is hard working, loyal, dependable and has a clear vision of wanting to settle down; making plans to change his career to save money, buy a house for us and have children. Our friendship has always been something that we have been proud of within our relationship - we have a lot of friends who are in relationships but you can see they do not enjoy each other's company. This is not the case for us.
In saying this, an ongoing issue in our relationship has been (which from reading other people's posts, seems to be common) is our mismatched sex drive. When we first got together, we were both very young so sex was not an issue however, about 3 years in, I found myself not wanting it as much and due to this, my partner started to feel unwanted. I found this hard as I knew I loved him, but for some reason sex was just something that I struggled to want to initiate. It wasn't that I was feeling sexual but not with him - I just wasn't really feeling it at all at any time. About 5 years in, while every other part of our relationship seemed to be strong, my partner tried to break things off due to the feelings he had of being unwanted in the sex department. Ultimately, we worked through this because we both did not want to lose each other. Our sex life improved slightly but not by much and has slowly gone back to once or twice a month - sometimes longer. I have always felt that my feelings for him have been consistent throughout the 10 years however, in recent months, something has shifted. Everything was going well, we were spending lots of time together, I recently felt a peak in my sex drive again so we were having it more consistently and all seemed well until one night we were having sex and it pains me to admit because I love him and he is such a good person, but when he tried to kiss me during foreplay - I felt repulsed. I cannot explain why or what caused it but I could not bring myself to kiss him back. I simply turned my head and he didn't seem to notice so we continued, just without kissing.
Since then, I strangely found that I was feeling quite sexual in a way that I hadn't ever felt before. I started daydreaming about exploring my sexuality - I have always been attracted to woman but also thinking about threesomes etc and also started experimenting with toys by myself - which is something I had NEVER wanted/desired before. I tried to channel these feelings towards our sex life but something just kept stopping me. I also have not opened up about this to him.
Since then, I have been questioning everything. We have been together since I was 18 and I am feeling a pull towards independence. I am trying to work through why this has happened but without some big event or clear issue between us it has made me feel so guilty. I have been trying to fight the feelings but they are a constant now for over a month. I have been upfront with him about everything except the feelings I felt when we last were intimate, I don't think it is necessary to hurt him like that and we are taking some time apart. He is devastated as he feels like it has reaffirmed his feelings from years ago of feeling unwanted yet is sure that I am all he wants.
I also have been thinking about our personalities and alignment. I am quite extroverted, always making new friends and very social. I wouldn't say he is introverted, he just has had the same friends from high school which there is no problem with - it highlights his loyalty however, he has been very clear that he is not interested in making new friends and has not really made an effort to get to know my friends. All of the partners are great friends within my group of friends yet while I have been with my partner the longest, they have only met him a handful of times. I always am at events alone because he doesn't want to come. While it hasn't been a massive issue as I am independent, it does hurt or feel embarrassing sometimes to always be coming alone and have everyone ask where he is and often find myself telling white lies so that it didn't make him seem like a bad guy to my friends. I have made this known to him and he has made a small effort to come to things but still not much. I also feel like his moods can fluctuate a lot - I understand he has a pretty physically demanding job however he can be quite flat for days on end and then with our intimacy issues on top of that, I feel a wall come up and sex seems to be the only way to break that down for a few days but it will quickly rebuild.
I know if we were to stay together, we would still have a good life, our friendship within our relationship is strong enough to withstand this I think and I can still see us having a family together however I wonder if maybe the friendship has overtaken everything and my fear of losing him as a constant in my life is prohibiting me from finding my independence. We have booked in to see a therapist together so I am hoping that can help to bring some clarity. Has anyone experienced anything similar to this? I feel so lost and just cannot work out what is right for me and am scared I could be throwing away something that I might not be able to find again. I care about him deeply but wonder if that is enough and whether these feelings will ever be able to pass..
