Can I retake the entrance exam for a state university even if I’m already a 1st year in a private college?

I didn’t pass the state university entrance exam before, so I enrolled in a private college. I’m currently in my first year, but I’m planning to take the entrance exam again.

I honestly don’t mind starting over as a freshman if I get in — it's more practical than paying for a private school for four years. Just wondering if that's even allowed and if anyone here has done something similar?
